Facilities

The Port Washington Fire Department also maintains a number of firehouses that are strategically placed throughout the district to ensure adequate response times to all portions. These firehouses provide many functions including storage of apparatus, administrative work, personnel duty/sleep quarters, as well as emergency shelters/operation centers.

We presently maintain seven buildings within the district. These facilities include:

(click on each image for a larger picture)

Port Washington Fire Department Headquarters
"Headquarters"
423 Port Washington Boulevard

Located at the southern end of the district, this building serves
as the Administrative office for the Chiefs as well as
the Port Washington Fire Department Board of Directors ("Fireboard")

Additionally, the garage is used to house apparatus as needed to cover the
southern end of the district.

Interesting Fact:
Fire Medic Company No. 1 operated out of this facility
for the first 12 years of their existence until 1991 when they
moved to their own building on Harbor Road.

Atlantic Hook and Ladder Co. 1 Headquarters
"Company #1 Mainhouse"

25 Carlton Avenue

Located just off Main Street, this building serves
as headquarters to PWFD's "Truck Company"

This building also serves as the "daytime response" building, all members respond to this location during daytime hours.

Apparatus from both engine companies, as well as the truck company, are located here.

Interesting Fact:

This current firehouse was built in 1993, replacing the
original firehouse that was over 100 years old. Atlantic's original firehouse
was listed in a number of "haunted houses" books, and many
members tell stories of strange noises and events from various parts
of the building.

Protection Engine Company No. 1 Headquarters
"Company #2 Mainhouse"

South Washington Street

Located just off Main Street, this building serves
as headquarters to one of PWFD's two "Engine Companies"

Interesting Fact:
This building has existed in Port Washington since the early 1900s,
and was renovated during the seventies to accommodate today's larger
fire apparatus.

Flower Hill Hose Company No. 1 Headquarters
"Company #3 Mainhouse"

Haven Avenue

Located next to the Port Washington Long Island Rail Road station,
this building servers as headquarters to PWFD's other "Engine Company"

Interesting Fact:
This building has just finished an extensive renovation project designed
to accommodate the company's growth and newer, larger fire apparatus.
Like Protection's, this firehouse dates back to the early 1900s.

Fire Medic Company No. 1
"Company #4 Mainhouse"

65 Harbor Road

Located opposite the beautiful Mill Pond, this building serves as
headquarters to PWFD's "EMS" Company. This particular facility
was designed with the different needs of an EMS company, specifically,
one that is conducive to housing personnel on a 24 hour basis.

Interesting Fact:
This building was once a neon light factory. Fire Medic Company No. 1
purchased the building in 1989 and renovated the original standing structure.
Fire Medic Company No. 1 began operating out of the building on July 1,
1991.

Atlantic Hook & Ladder Co. 1 Annex
"Company #1 Annex"

Avenue A

Located in the terrace section of Port Washington, this building accommodates
those truck company members living in the northern part of the peninsula. This
building supplements the apparatus stored at the Company No. 1 Mainhouse.

Interesting Fact:
The trucks stored at this building are known as the "Terrace Terrors".

Protection Engine Co. 1 Annex
"Company #2 Annex"

Channel Drive

Located off Shore Road, this building accommodates those members living
in the Manorhaven and Port Washington North sections of town.

Interesting Fact:
This building is often jokingly referred to as the "Manorhaven Annex", referring
to the large number of members we have living in and responding
from the Village of Manorhaven.
